Travel Guide to Ocean Grove

Ocean Grove NJ, A National Historic District: Victorian 19th Century summer resort.

Ocean Grove, NJ: Historic buildings, beautiful beach, non-commercial Boardwalk: Summer Renters Welcome!

Greetings from Ocean Grove, NJ!

Vacationers who discover historic Ocean Grove on the Jersey Shore tend to return summer after summer - and off-season too - because this very special town casts a spell. The founders made a planned community and their design has been preserved. Home Owners have outdone themselves restoring cottages, cut-shingle houses, large hotels - turned into modern condos inside - so many different kinds and sizes of summer rental possibilities.

While the houses are close together with little or no lawn, the public spaces and parkways, with dramatic garden arrangements, are expansive setting for painted ladies - decorative and multi-colored houses -  of centuries ago.

History is everywhere: Centennial Cottage, a house museum and herb garden, an Historical Society Museum, Day's Outdoor Ice Cream Parlor, Nagles apothecary museum and soda shop.

There's living history too: the Great Auditorium of 1894 continues on with Saturday evening summer concerts featuring famous guest artists and Sunday morning services featuring famous guest preachers. Ocean Grove's Auditorium of 1894 surrounded by colorful tent houses of vacationing families - the descendents of the first summer beach-goers. Part tent, part cottage houses with colorful awnings and their own front porches and flower boxes - the waiting list is long.

Ocean Grove's boardwalk is clutter-free, non-commercial offering an unobstructed view of the century buildings along Ocean Avenue.

Beach comb early mornings for sea glass and star fish. Ride a bike, walk your dog, lounge on the beach (except for Sunday morning - it's closed).  Everything you need ( except an alcoholic drink) is all here: Ocean Grove is a dry town.

On the boardwalk - walking north - is Asbury Park, a sister city to Ocean Grove - the wild and crazy sister that is - with a taste for clubbing and rock and roll. Asbury Park is undergoing a rebirth - opening new bars and nightclubs with an urban vibe.

Every weekend - between these two summer resorts - something is always going on - Ocean Grove's The Giant Flea Market v Asbury Park's tattoo convention.  The OG Boardwalk Art Show v Madam Marie's Fortunes in Asbury. The Great Auditorium afternoon organ concerts on the Hope Jones theater organ v an impromptu jam of bongo players on Asbury's boardwalk.
